Yellow and amber weather warnings are in effect for the weekend, and thunderstorms are predicted to affect large areas of the nation. As the weekend approaches, people throughout practically all of England and parts of Scotland should brace themselves for intense downpours.
The Met Office issued a warning that “significant” flooding and a potential threat to life might result from Saturday’s expected torrential rains in a portion of Southern England. Several major towns and cities, including London, Brighton, Portsmouth, Chelmsford, St Albans, and Cambridge, are under an amber warning for thunderstorms between 4 and 11 a.m.Â
Up to 70-100 mm of rain could accumulate in a few hours in this location, with 20-40 mm of rain falling in an hour. It is one of several thunderstorm weather warnings that have been issued nationwide. Two yellow warnings are in effect for Friday, one of which will cover a large portion of Yorkshire and the northeast region of England from 11 a.m. until midnight.
Later, the East Midlands were included in the alert’s coverage area. The second will take effect in London and the southeast from 9 p.m. to 11:49 p.m.
The more serious amber alert will be accompanied on Saturday by two yellow warnings. From midnight until nine o’clock at night, a yellow warning will be in effect for the majority of England.
A yellow warning is also in effect for Eastern Scotland from 4 p.m. until noon on Sunday. Additionally, a warning will be issued for the southwest region of England starting at noon on Sunday and lasting until three in the morning on Monday.
Andy Page, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, stated: “Intense rainfall will impact parts of the UK as thunderstorms move in from France. A range of severe weather warnings have been issued, including an Amber warning covering southeast England and London. The intense rainfall could lead to surface water flooding as well as frequent lightning and hail.
“The situation is evolving, and warnings may be changed or added. This weekend is expected to be busy on the roads as more schools in England and Wales break up for the summer holidays, so it’s important people keep up-to-date with the very latest forecast. There will be spells of more pleasant weather in parts of the UK throughout the weekend, with some Sunny spells in between systems as they move through.”
Forecasters from the Met Office caution that floods and spraying may cause traffic jams, road closures, and the potential for some communities to be isolated.
