With the announcement of nine new cast members, the eagerly awaited HBO television adaptation of Harry Potter has advanced significantly and will further mould the magical world for a new generation of viewers. Filming for the series, which is described as a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s cherished book saga, is scheduled to start this summer at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, UK, with a late 2026 or early 2027 release date.
Among the biggest casting reveals is Johnny Flynn as the cunning Lucius Malfoy, patriarch of the pure-blood Malfoy family, with Lox Pratt cast as his son Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter’s school rival. Flynn, known for Ripley and The Dig, brings gravitas to the role previously portrayed by Jason Isaacs. Lox Pratt, rising to fame in the BBC’s Lord of the Flies, steps into Tom Felton’s iconic shoes as the blond Slytherin bully.
The series also welcomes Bel Powley (The Morning Show) and Daniel Rigby (BAFTA winner for Eric and Ernie) as Harry’s cold and dismissive aunt and uncle, Petunia and Vernon Dursley. The show’s creators revealed that the Dursleys will be portrayed younger than in the films, a creative decision that aligns more closely with their depiction in Rowling’s novels.
Fellow BAFTA winner Katherine Parkinson, best known for The IT Crowd and Rivals, has been cast as Molly Weasley, the warm, formidable matriarch of the Weasley family. Julie Walters memorably brought the character to life in the film series.
Also joining the Hogwarts ranks are newcomers Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, and Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, bringing fresh faces to the familiar halls of the wizarding school. Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic, will be played by seasoned stage and film actor Bertie Carvel. Carvel previously portrayed Tony Blair in The Crown.
These cast members join those who were previously revealed, such as Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore.
Leading the Harry Potter HBO series are three young newcomers: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
Written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner (Succession), with Mark Mylod directing several episodes, the series is a collaboration between HBO, Brontë Film and TV, Warner Bros. Television, and Heyday Films. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman also serve as executive producers.
