Douglas Henshall, the BAFTA-winning Scottish actor renowned for portraying DI Jimmy Perez in the BBC series Shetland. He has secured a significant role in the upcoming independent feature film Angh. The movie, set in 1960s Nagaland, India, marks a major step in Henshall’s career following his departure from Shetland in 2022 after seven successful seasons.

Angh, an acclaimed filmmaker known for his award-winning short films, explores an untold chapter of Naga history. The film’s narrative centers on a proud Konyak chief who grapples with preserving his people’s fading traditions amidst the arrival of an American missionary.

As famine looms and his wife’s health deteriorates, the chief and his mute son face a heart-wrenching decision between survival and staying true to their ancestral ways.

Henshall will play a pivotal role in this profoundly evocative story, which aims to highlight universal themes of identity, survival, and cultural preservation.

The case also includes first-time local actors from Nagaland, making it a milestone for Naga cinema. The production team has chosen to shoot entirely on 16mm film to achieve an authentic and textured aesthetic that complements the historical setting.

Director Theja Rio expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “Nagaland’s history, culture, and untold narratives hold immense cinematic potential, and this film is our way of sharing them with the world. Shooting on 16mm, collaborating with local actors, and having Douglas Henshall as part of the journey make this project truly special. We believe it will be a meaningful addition to the cinematic landscape.”

Producer Nancy Nisa Beso echoed these sentiments: “This film is deeply personal to us. While rooted in Nagaland’s history, its themes resonate universally. Bringing together local talent, a young international crew, and shooting on 16mm has been a rare and special experience. Having Douglas Hendhall join us only strengthens our vision.”

The production of Angh represents a groundbreaking moment for Naga cinema. It merges global filmmaking techniques with local stories and talent. This offers an authentic representation of Nagaland’s rich cultural heritage. The film is being produced by Winter Hymns Films and Undercover Squirrel—two companies committed to amplifying diverse voices.

With its compelling storyline and international collaboration, Angh is expected to make its debut on the international festival circuit upon completion. No release date has been announced yet.

As Douglas Henshall transitions from his iconic role in Shetland to this ambitious period drama, audiences eagerly await what promises to be another remarkable performance from the celebrated actor.
