1 Mins read

The rumour of the HBO adaptation of the Harry Potter series is set to begin filming in the summer of 2025. It reignites excitement and controversy among fans of J.K. Rowling’s beloved franchise.

However, rumours are gearing up as the casting is swirling, especially the iconic character Rubeus Hagrid, traditionally portrayed by the late Robbie Coltrane.

Recent reports suggest that Brett Goldstein, known for his role in Ted Lasso, is the frontrunner to take on the role of Hagrid. This casting choice has sparked significant debate within the fan community, and many shared their statements on X.

One person questioned, “What next? The Weasleys are going to be blonde, and the Malfoys, Ginger, and Harry will wear eye contact.?”

Another fan added, “Um, Hagrid is supposed to be 8 feet tall and English.” Another person joked, “I don’t know if the world is ready for sexy Hagrid.”

The series aims to remain faithful to the source material, with characters depicted at their proper ages as per the books. This approach has led to other notable casting discussions, including Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and potential candidates Mark Rylance and Mark Strong for Albus Dumbledore.

Additionally, Sharon Horgan and Rachel Weisz are reportedly in contention for the role of Minerva McGonagall.

HBO, in response to the casting, said, “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumour and speculation. As we make our way through preproduction, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession, serves as a showrunner, promising a fresh take on familiar narratives while exploring previously uncharted areas of Hogwarts.

Although the filming will take place at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, where all previous Harry Potter films were produced. The series is expected to span a decade with plans for seven seasons, each focusing on one of Rowling’s books, aiming to introduce new generations to Harry Potter’s magical world.

Despite all the controversies, J.K. Rowling’s polarizing presence in contemporary discussions. HBO remains committed to delivering a series that resonates with both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

The show is slated for release in late 2026 or early 2027 making a significant moment in the ongoing legacy of Harry Potter.
