Christopher Masterson, Justin Berfield Set Returns in ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Revival

2 Mins read

The original cast of Malcolm in the Middle is being reunited in the show’s Disney+ relaunch. The relaunch of “Malcolm in the Middle” is reintroducing several familiar characters alongside new additions, while implementing a significant casting alteration.

Alongside their original series, co-stars Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, and Kiana Madeira, who plays Malcolm’s (Muniz) fiancée, Christopher Masterson, and Justin Berfield have joined the four-episode revival.

Keeley Karsten, Vaughan Murrae, Anthony Timpano, and Caleb Ellsworth-Clark have also committed to the series. Masterson and Berfield will return to their parts as Francis and Reese, Malcolm’s older brothers.

Erik Per Sullivan, who portrayed younger brother Dewey in the 2000–06 Fox series, will be replaced by Ellsworth-Clark (Nightmare Alley). (Sullivan’s involvement in the 2010 movie Twelve caused him to leave show business.)

A newborn and toddler in the later seasons of the original series, Jamie is the fifth child of Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek), who Timpano (Riverdale) will portray.

Murrae (The Way Home) portrays Kelly, the youngest member of the family. Malcolm’s daughter Leah, played by Karsten (The Fabelmans), is just as intelligent as her father but far more emotional and sensitive. In December 2024, the Malcolm in the Middle reboot was ordered by Disney+.

Following Malcolm and Leah as they become entangled in his family’s turmoil after Hal and Lois insist he attend their 40th anniversary celebration, the four episodes will follow him.

The Resurrection, which comes from 20th Television and New Regency, is written and executive produced by Linwood Boomer, the originator of the series.

Ken Kwapis will direct all four episodes, while Cranston, Tracy Katsky of KatCo, Arnon Milchan of New Regency and Gail Berman, Yariv Milchan and Natalie Lehmann, and Kwapis will serve as executive producers. Co-EPs Laura Delahaye and Jimmy Simons.

According to Variety, Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson will play Francis and Reese, respectively, in the Disney+ adaptation of the beloved sitcom.

Frankie Muniz will reprise his role as the main character, as previously revealed, and Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek will reprise their roles as Hal and Lois’ parents. Additionally, according to an exclusive Variety source, Kiana Madeira will play Malcolm’s girlfriend, Tristan.

Integral Artists represents Ellsworth-Clark. The Characters Talent Agency represents Timpano. Abrams Zimel & Associates Inc. represents Murrae. Buchwald and Brillstein Entertainment Partners represent Karsten.

While Kelly is a new character whose appearance was alluded to in the series finale when it was revealed that Hal and Lois were expecting a sixth child, Jamie was first introduced in the fourth season of “Malcolm in the Middle.”

Leah is described as “Malcolm’s daughter and shares his impulsiveness, sardonic humour, and frighteningly high intelligence, but she’s far more sensitive and emotional.”

Production on “Malcolm in the Middle” is scheduled to start in Vancouver in the upcoming weeks. “Malcolm and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal and Lois demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party,” reads the official logline for the upcoming episodes.

The creator of the original series, Linwood Boomer, is back for the resurrection as an executive producer and writer. Executive producers include Cranston, Tracy Katsky of KatCo, Gail Berman, Arnon Milchan of New Regency, Yariv Milchan, and Natalie Lehmann.

All four episodes will be executive-produced and directed by Ken Kwapis. Co-executive producers are Laura Delahaye and Jimmy Simons. 20th Television and New Regency are producing the limited series.
