Michelle Trachtenberg, renowned for her roles in “Gossip Girl,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and “Harriet the Spy,” tragically passed away at the age of 39 in her New York City apartment on February 26, 2025. Her death has now been officially attributed to complications arising from diabetes mellitus, according to the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
More than a month after her passing, authorities confirmed the cause of her death following a review of toxicology test results. The medical examiner classified her death as natural, with no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
Initially, her family had objected to an autopsy due to religious beliefs, which led to her death being initially listed as undetermined. However, subsequent toxicology analyses clarified the cause as complications related to diabetes.
Trachtenberg’s family, citing religious reasons, declined an autopsy, which is common in Jewish tradition, where bodies are considered sacred. Despite this, the medical examiner was able to determine the cause through toxicology testing, which does not require an autopsy.
The tests revealed that her death was directly linked to diabetes mellitus, a chronic condition affecting how the body uses blood sugar.
The actress was discovered unresponsive in her residence after emergency responders responded to a 911 call. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Reports indicate she had been dealing with health issues recently, including a liver transplant, which may have contributed to her health complications. Some sources suggest that post-transplant diabetes can occur due to medications used to prevent organ rejection, potentially leading to severe health issues.
Tributes from her colleagues poured in shortly after her death. Blake Lively, her co-star from “Gossip Girl,” described her as fiercely loyal, brave and uniquely herself. Sarah Michelle Gellar, her on-screen sister from “Buffy,” shared heartfelt memories, emphasising her love for Trachtenberg.
Other notable actors, including Ed Westwick and Melissa Gilbert, also expressed their condolences and admiration for her talent and personality.
Trachtenberg’s career began at a young age, with her first appearances in commercials and television series. She gained fame as a child star in Nickelodeon’s “The Adventures of Pete & Pete” and starred in the film “Harriet the Spy” at age 11. Her later roles cemented her status as a versatile actress with significant parts in television and film.
Her sudden passing has left fans and colleagues mourning the loss of a talented and beloved actress. The confirmation of her cause of death as diabetes-related complications provides closure to her fans and highlights the importance of managing chronic health conditions.
