Moeen Ali has announced retirement from International Cricket after playing 92 T20Is, 68 Tests, and 138 ODIs for England. The 37-year-old cricketer’s decision comes after he was left out of England’s T20I squad to face Australia later this month.
In an interview with Daily Mail, Moeen Ali said he is 37 years old and didn’t get picked for this month’s Australia series.
He said that he has played a lot of cricket for England and it is time for the next generation. He also added that he thinks this is the right time to leave International cricket and feels he has done his part.
Mathew Mott was sacked as head coach of the limited-overs side last month after disappointing title defenses in the T20 World Cups and the ODI and the desire for change continued with the removal of Moeen Ali and Johny Bairstow, these are two senior men sharing over 400 caps.
Moeen Ali became the first British Asian to captain England in a T20I match and in that time he led the side against Australia in 2020.
He has been an influential vice-captain to Jos Buttler in recent years but he has acknowledged in the past that his international cricket career is winding down.
After playing 68 Tests, 92 T20s, and 138 ODIsfor England, Moeen Ali stated that he still feels that he can compete at the highest level, but added, that he was trying “to be realistic” regarding his international future.
He told to Daily Mail, “I could hold on and try to play for England again”.
He also stated that even upon retiring he doesn’t feel that he is not good enough, he still feels that he can play. Moeen Ali said that he got how things are, and the team needs to evolve into another cycle. He added that it is about being real to himself.
Moeen previously took retirement from Test cricket in September 2021 and he agreed to make a comeback for England’s home 2023 Ashes series.
He made his final appearance in England’s T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to India in June. Moeen finishes his cricket career with 6678 runs, eight centuries, twenty-eight fifties, and 366 wickets across his entire career.
Moeen said that people forget the impact you make in games. It might only have been 20 or 30, but it was crucial 20 or 30.
Looking forward, Moeen added that he wants to continue playing franchise cricket, however, he hopes to delve into coaching.
He said that coaching is something he wants to do- he wants to be one of the best”. He also added, “I can learn a lot from (McCullum)”.
