The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning to the titular role

According to Variety, Sarah Michelle Gellar, star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is in talks to return to her role as the vampire-slaying huntress, and a remake of the show is almost certain to happen on Hulu.

Gellar would appear as a recurring character, even though the focus of the series will be on a new Slayer.

The revival is also being discussed for directing and executive producing by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao, who is well known for her films Nomadland and Eternals.

Dolly Parton, whose production firm Sandollar created the original sitcom, will serve as executive producer of the show. “They’re still working on that,”  Parton said a year ago, confirming that the relaunch was in the works. They are considering reviving and redesigning it.

In the meanwhile, Nora and Lila Zuckerman will create and executive produce the television program and its spinoff, Angel.

Whedon was accused of fostering a hostile work atmosphere during the creation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff, Angel, even though he was in charge of the original run of the program and the film on which it was based.

There is currently no information available regarding the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot premise, other than the fact that it will center on a new Slayer and that Gellar may reprise her role as Buffy.

Buffy Summers, a high school Slayer selected by fate to fight vampires, demons, and other supernatural beings, was the main character of the series. Rupert Giles, a Watcher, and her pals Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris helped her in the battle.

Nellie Andreeva, a journalist for Deadline, wrote, “Beyond the pilot order, I hear the reboot is starting a writer’s room soon, a sign that Hulu and the studios have high expectations for the project going to series.” No additional actors from the original series have been confirmed to return as of yet.

Three years after being accused of misbehaviour on the sets of many productions, Andreeva also said that Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy, would not be involved in the reboot. Charisma Carpenter, who portrayed Cordelia in Buffy, is among the performers who have accused Whedon of abuse and threats.

Previously opposing the notion of a Buffy reboot, Gellar stated in 2023: “I am very proud of the show that we created, and [a revival] doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up.

I am all for them continuing the story because there’s the story of female empowerment … [But] the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”

However, after witnessing several successful reboots, Gellar disclosed late last year that she had altered her mind, saying, “It’s funny, I always used to say no because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect. But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter and realising there are ways to do it does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.”

Following the release of these remarks, Deadline stated that talks with Gellar for the revival had started. Scrubs and Malcolm in the Middle are among the other programs that have confirmed reboots.
